Fils on the rise, Fritz on serve: who wins in Paris?

Fils v Fritz Match page ›

The riser against the server

Here's the puzzle. Arthur Fils is the player trending up, he's the higher-ranked man, and Predictionist still leans to Taylor Fritz. So does Fils's rise this season outweigh a small serving edge?

The rise is real. Since the start of the season Fils has gone up on Predictionist's ratings while Fritz has slipped, and Fils now sits No. 11 against Fritz's No. 26. A rating gives more credit for beating strong opponents, so that gap says Fils's results have been better this season. The rankings tell the same story, ATP No. 7 against No. 12. Fils won Barcelona and Cincinnati, while Fritz's one title this year came in Washington.

A serve gap you could miss

Fritz's edge comes from his serve. Predictionist expects him to win 70% of his serve points here, against 68% for Fils. That's a thin margin. Fritz should lose a few fewer points on his own serve than Fils does on his, so Fils will find it a little harder to break him.

Serve is the biggest factor in Predictionist's number for Fritz, yet the gap is small. Nobody should expect it to settle this match on its own.

Two different safety nets when a match drags on

Each man has his own strength in a close finish. Fritz is 20–12 in tiebreaks this season, across 32 of them, against 12–11 for Fils. When a set stays level and goes to a tiebreak, Fritz has won more of them.

Fils leans on something else: 14–2 in deciding sets, from the 16 matches that went to one. That's a strong sign he copes when a match goes the full distance.

One old meeting, won by Fils

They've met once. Fils beat Fritz 6-4 3-6 6-3 in Tokyo on 26 September 2024.

That's a single match from a while back, so it's a small hint at most. It doesn't hand Fritz anything, and if it nudges anyone, it's Fils.

Two routes into the last 16

Both men are here on wins, though they got here differently. Fils beat Tomas Machac 6-3 7-6 on Wednesday 4 November, his only match of the week so far.

Fritz has had two matches, and both went to three sets. He beat Benjamin Bonzi 3-6 6-3 6-4, then Alex Molcan 6-7 7-5 7-6, with the last set decided by a tiebreak. Fils's route has been shorter. The match is set for Thursday 5 November at 19:30 UTC.

Our lean

We lean to Fritz, with Predictionist giving him a 57% chance, and his serve is the biggest factor in that number. It's a slim edge against a player who's rising and rated higher, and it only holds if Fritz's serve stays ahead of Fils's.

What to watch

Both have just won a match that included a tiebreak: Fritz in the third set against Molcan, Fils in the second against Machac. If a set goes that way here, see who handles it better.
