Arnaldi's clay form meets the hard courts of Paris
Norrie v Arnaldi Match page ›
A clay-court title winner on the wrong surface
Matteo Arnaldi is the higher-ranked player here, at ATP No. 36 to Cameron Norrie's No. 41. He also won the Cagliari title this year and beat Norrie in their one meeting. Yet Predictionist makes Norrie the clear favourite for this 1/32-finals match on Monday 2 November. The surface is the first thing to look at.
The Paris Masters is played on hard courts, and Arnaldi's season has been built on clay instead. He's 14–7 there but only 4–11 on hard. Norrie's 18–16 on hard isn't dominant, but he wins about as often as he loses on this surface. Arnaldi loses most of his matches on it.
Where Arnaldi's service games are exposed
Serve is one of the biggest factors in Predictionist's number. Norrie is expected to win 66% of his service points against 61% for Arnaldi. That gap gives Norrie a little more room in every game he serves, and it makes Arnaldi fight harder to stay level in his own.
The hold figures say much the same. Norrie has held serve 80% of the time this season, about the tour average. Arnaldi's 73% is 9 points below the ATP median. His service games are easier to break, and Norrie is steady enough to take some of those chances.
One win in Arnaldi's pocket
Arnaldi beat Norrie 6-3 6-4 6-3 in the 1/16-finals round of the US Open in September 2023, also on hard courts. It was a straight-sets win, and Predictionist counts it in his favour.
It's still one match, and it's an old one. It shows Arnaldi has beaten Norrie on a hard court before. It doesn't show he'll do it again with this season's hard-court form behind him.
Arnaldi's route to an upset
If Arnaldi has a way through, it's a long match. He's 13–8 in deciding sets this season, while Norrie is 9–10. Against current top-10 players Arnaldi is 2–1 this season, while Norrie is 2–9.
Both men arrive off defeats in Vienna. Norrie lost 4-6 6-3 7-6 to Daniil Medvedev, going the full three sets. Arnaldi went out 7-5 6-2 to Luciano Darderi.
Our lean
We lean Norrie, with Predictionist giving him a 69% chance. Arnaldi's way back in is to hold serve much more often than he has this season and drag the match into the long contest his deciding-set record suits.
What to watch
Watch Arnaldi's service games. If they stay short and clean, the upset is alive. If Norrie keeps creating break-point chances, the serve gap is deciding the match.
