Can Ruud stop Borges fighting back again in Paris?
Ruud v Borges Match page ›A rematch where the comeback is the story
Ruud has the stronger résumé on paper, and Borges has the freshest memory. In Basel on 28 October, Borges lost the first set 1-6 and still won 6-3 6-4. Ruud now has to stop that script repeating in the Paris Masters quarter-final on Friday 6 November.
The series is level at 2-2, and the pattern inside it is neat. Ruud won the two straight-set meetings, 6-3 6-2 in Los Cabos in 2024 and 7-5 6-4 in Toronto in 2025. Borges won the other two, and both times he was a set down. At the French Open in 2025 he lost the opening set 2-6, then took the next three. Predictionist counts the Basel meeting in Borges's favour, a small sign that it takes their last match seriously.
Ruud's edge on serve is real but thin
The biggest factor in Predictionist's number is Ruud's higher rating, with a stronger serve-and-return game close behind. Ruud is No. 27 on Predictionist's ratings and Borges is No. 68. That's a clear gap, though not a huge one.
On serve the two are close. Predictionist expects Ruud to win 68% of his service points and Borges 66%. Ruud also holds 86% of his service games to Borges's 84%. Borges won't be blown off the court, but he'll have to dig a little harder than Ruud to find openings, and over a long match those small differences add up.
Two clean runs that don't separate them
Neither man has lost a set this week. Ruud beat Juan Manuel Cerundolo, then Rafael Jodar, now ranked No. 10, and then Jan-Lennard Struff, all in straight sets. The Jodar win is the best result on either side.
Borges has been just as tidy, beating Moise Kouame, Karen Khachanov (No. 25) and Ignacio Buse (No. 33) in straight sets. The last of those was 6-0 6-2. Both arrive sharp, so form this week gives little reason to pick one over the other.
If the match goes the distance
A third set is where Borges has found his best tennis against Ruud, so the numbers there matter. Ruud is 9–5 in deciding sets this season. That's only 14 matches, so treat it as a hint.
Tiebreaks are shakier ground for both. Ruud is 8–11 this season and Borges 10–19, so neither can count on a breaker to rescue a tight set.
Our lean
Ruud is the likelier winner, and Predictionist gives him a 62% chance on the strength of his rating and serve. With the series level and Basel so recent, Borges is a live threat. If he again turns a lost first set into a deciding set, this moves close to a toss-up.
What to watch
Whether Ruud can turn a first-set lead into a finished match. Both of Borges's wins over him came after losing the opening set.
