Can Sasnovich's return break down Sakkari's serve?
Sasnovich v Sakkari Match page ›A sharper return against a slightly steadier serve
Maria Sakkari is WTA No. 30 and Aliaksandra Sasnovich is No. 101, so on paper this looks routine. The numbers that matter most for this quarter-final say otherwise. Sasnovich has broken serve in 41% of her recent return games, while Sakkari has managed 32%. That's the widest gap between them, and it's all in the underdog's favour.
So the question for Friday is simple. Can Sasnovich's return get through Sakkari's serve often enough to drag the match away from the rankings?
Why Sakkari still leads
Sakkari holds serve a little more often, 70% of recent service games against 67% for Sasnovich. It's a small edge. Sasnovich's serve isn't a liability, and Sakkari's isn't a wall. But it means Sakkari's own service games should be the calmer ones, and that matters when the other side is the one doing most of the attacking on return.
The biggest factor in Predictionist's number is the rating gap: Sakkari is No. 76 on Predictionist's ratings, Sasnovich No. 118. That rating is built from a long run of results against varied opposition, so it carries more weight than one good week. The serve gap comes second.
Four matches in the legs against two
Sasnovich arrives with plenty of match play here. She's won four times, going through Ying Cheuk Shek (No. 634), Carol Young Suh Lee (No. 153), Katie Volynets (No. 78) and Talia Gibson (No. 36). She dropped only one set in nine, 5-7 against Gibson, and then won the decider 7-6. It's a real run, if a mixed one in terms of opposition.
Sakkari has played two matches. She beat the same Lee, 6-1 6-4, then came from a set down to beat Maya Joint, No. 90, 4-6 6-3 6-3. Sasnovich beat Lee 6-2 6-1, so the two stories line up fairly closely. Neither run settles anything on its own.
Berlin was a long time ago
They've met once. Sakkari won 6-2 6-1 in the round of 16 in Berlin on 22 June 2023. It's a single match from a different season, and it says little about how this one will go.
If the match goes the distance, there's no obvious lean either. Both players are 9–8 in deciding sets this season. Their tiebreak records are weaker: Sasnovich is 3–9 and Sakkari 4–6. Those come from small samples, so they're hints at best.
Our lean
Sakkari is the modest favourite, with Predictionist giving her a 58% chance, but Sasnovich's return keeps this closer than the ranking gap suggests. If Sasnovich is regularly breaking, it's near even; if Sakkari holds comfortably, the rating gap should show.
What to watch
Whether Sasnovich can break into Sakkari's service games, since her return is the one area where she clearly leads.
