Waltert's steady serve against Stefanini's return
Waltert v Stefanini Match page ›
Can a slightly better serve survive a far better return?
Waltert has the edge on her own serve, but it's a small one. She's held in 63% of her recent service games, against 61% for Stefanini. Neither player can count on an easy hold.
The return numbers matter more here. Stefanini has broken serve in 53% of her recent return games, which gives her far more chances to take a set away. Waltert has managed 38%, so her own openings should be much rarer.
A hard-court week that suits one of them
The Chennai Open is played on hard courts, and the seasons split sharply here. Stefanini is 34–19 on hard this year. Waltert is 11–16.
Waltert's good results have come elsewhere. She's 16–12 on clay, a surface nobody is playing on this week. Stefanini is 1–5 on clay, so the two have clearly built their seasons in different places. This week is on Stefanini's ground.
The rating gap and the season's direction
The biggest factor in Predictionist's number is the rating gap. Predictionist keeps its own ratings, separate from the official WTA rankings. On them Stefanini is No. 254 and Waltert No. 353. Over the season, Stefanini's rating has risen and Waltert's has fallen.
The official WTA rankings show a much smaller gap. Waltert is No. 133 and Stefanini No. 117, close enough that nobody would call this a mismatch on paper.
Both arrive with a Tuesday win. Stefanini beat Rada Zolotareva 6-2 6-2. Waltert needed three sets to get past Sahaja Yamalapalli, 6-4 3-6 6-3.
If the match goes the distance
A third set wouldn't be new to Waltert. She's 12–10 in deciding sets this season, and she's just played one. Stefanini is 12–8, so a long match doesn't clearly favour either player.
Tiebreaks don't split them. Waltert is 6–6 and Stefanini 6–7, small samples that are a hint at most.
Our lean
Stefanini is the likelier winner, and Predictionist gives her a 61% chance, mostly on the rating gap and the strength of her return. They've never met, though, and Waltert's serve is a little better, so an upset wouldn't be a shock.
What to watch
Whether Waltert's early service games stay short and clean, or Stefanini stretches them out and starts collecting break points.
